The MLB Mexico Series will send the Padres and Giants to Mexico City in April for a two-game series on the international stage.
It’s almost time for some international baseball thanks to the arrival of the MLB Mexico City Series.
It may have taken longer than hoped because of a global pandemic delaying plans, but Major League Baseball is once again spreading its wings and sending clubs to play in front of fans from outside the footprint of the United States.
This time fans can look forward to games in Mexico City.
Which teams are playing in the MLB Mexico Series?
The Padres and Giants are the teams facing off in the MLB Mexico City Series.
This will be the fourth time the Padres have traveled to Mexico for a regular-season series. They did so in 1996, 1999 and 2018, though each of those games were played in Monterrey. This will be their first time in Mexico City, since the 2020 Mexico City Series was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The two games in this year’s series are considered home games for San Diego.
As for San Francisco, this is their first taste of international play. While they played a three-game series in Puerto Rico against the Expos in 2004, they have never played internationally.
When and where is the MLB Mexico Series to be played?
The two games between the Padres and Giants will be played on Apr. 29 and 30 at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium in Mexico City.
The stadium is named after Alfredo Harp Helú who is a minority owner of the Padres. It has a capacity of 20,000.
