The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is set to open tonight with “Jeanne du Barry”, directed by French actress and filmmaker Maïwenn. The costume drama in which Johnny Depp plays King Louis XV of France is his first major film since the American actor’s high-profile defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, in 2022, over her claims that he was physically abusive.
Maïwenn, who also co-wrote “Jeanne du Barry” with Teddy Lussi-Modeste and Nicolas Livecchi, stars in the title role as the famous 18th century courtesan who becomes the favourite of King Louis XV.
Johnny Depp will not be the only Hollywood star to descend to the French Riviera this week. Actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Natalie Portman and Harrison Ford are among the powerhouse names attending the event, with Michael Douglas set to receive a honorary Palme d’Or at the opening ceremony of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
U.S. productions, indeed, are represented in force at the festival this year, including Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon”, Wes Anderson’s “Asteroïd City”, Pixar’s animated feature “Elemental”, Todd Haynes’ “May December” and James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”, the fifth and final outing for Harrison Ford as the archaeologist Dr. Henry Walton.
The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will run until May 27th at the Palais des Festival.
